About
Bill Burr is an American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, director, and podcaster born on June 10, 1968, in Canton, Massachusetts. The son of a nurse, Linda Ann, and a dentist, Robert Burr, he is of German and Irish descent and was raised Catholic. After graduating from Canton High School in 1987, he attended North Carolina State University for two semesters before earning a bachelor's degree in communications from Emerson College in Boston in 1993. Prior to launching his comedy career, he worked in warehouses. He made his Broadway debut in the 2025 revival of Glengarry Glen Ross.
Burr gave his first stand-up performance on March 2, 1992, at the age of 23, and relocated to New York City in 1994. Over the following years he appeared on Showtime at the Apollo in 2000, Comedy Central Presents in 2003, Just for Laughs in 2004, One Night Stand in 2005, and Live at Gotham in 2006. His first hour-long special, Why Do I Do This?, was filmed in New York in 2008. Subsequent specials include Let It Go, recorded at The Fillmore in San Francisco and premiered on Comedy Central on September 18, 2010; You People Are All the Same, which debuted in 2012 as the first stand-up special released exclusively on Netflix; I'm Sorry You Feel That Way, filmed in black and white at the Tabernacle Theater in Atlanta in 2014; Walk Your Way Out, which debuted on Netflix on January 31, 2017; and Paper Tiger, which debuted on Netflix on September 10, 2019.
On September 9, 2006, Burr performed at the Tweeter Center in Camden, New Jersey, as part of Opie and Anthony's Traveling Virus Comedy Tour. After the crowd booed multiple comedians, Burr delivered a 12-minute unscripted rant directed at the audience and the city of Philadelphia, ultimately receiving a standing ovation by its conclusion. In 2017, he reflected that he had not handled the situation professionally. The Huffington Post described the incident as a watershed moment in the history of comedy.
Since May 2007, Burr has recorded a weekly one-hour podcast, Bill Burr's Monday Morning Podcast, covering personal experiences, current events, touring, and sports, and responding to listener questions. The podcast is available on Spotify, YouTube, and the All Things Comedy network, which Burr co-founded with comedian Al Madrigal in 2012 as an artist-owned cooperative. The network launched on October 1, 2012, with 11 podcasts, and had grown to over 50 podcasts by 2014. All Things Records, a related label, launched in March 2014. Burr also co-hosts the Bill Bert Podcast with comedian Bert Kreischer, which premiered in October 2019.
On television, Burr gained wider recognition as a regular on Chappelle's Show in 2004 and went on to play Patrick Kuby in the fourth and fifth seasons of AMC's Breaking Bad from 2011 to 2013. He created, co-wrote, and voiced the lead character Frank Murphy in the Netflix animated sitcom F Is for Family, which premiered on December 18, 2015, and ran through 2021, with Burr also serving as executive producer alongside Michael Price. He played Migs Mayfeld in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian beginning in 2019. In 2024, he portrayed John F. Kennedy in the film Unfrosted.
