About

Walter Bronson Dudley, known professionally as Bide Dudley, was born on September 8, 1877, in Minneapolis to J. Todd Dudley and Ida Bronson Dudley. Though Minneapolis was his birthplace, he was raised primarily in Leavenworth, Kansas. He went on to become an American drama critic, playwright, composer, and book writer, working across newspapers, radio, and the Broadway stage. His daughter was actress Doris Dudley.

Dudley began his professional life in journalism, contributing newspaper work in Denver, Kansas City, and St. Joseph, Missouri. During his time in Denver, he authored a humor column for The Denver Post that ran for five years. He subsequently relocated to New York, where he wrote about drama for The New York Telegraph before being appointed drama critic for The Evening World in 1914.

His engagement with the entertainment industry extended into broadcasting. Dudley created a radio program called Theater Club, which delivered Broadway anecdotes and news presented in rhyme. He later served as drama critic for WOR radio.

His Broadway career spanned more than a decade and encompassed work as both a playwright and a composer. His credits include Odds and Ends of 1917 (1917), the musical Come Along (1919), the musical The Little Whopper (1919), the play Oh, Henry (1920), Sue, Dear (1922), The Matinee Girl (1926), the musical Bye, Bye, Bonnie (1927), and the play Borrowed Love (1929).

Dudley had been married to the former Taney Keplinger; the couple divorced in 1942. He died on January 4, 1944, at the age of 66, at Polyclinic Hospital in New York City.
