About
Beulah Garrick is a British actress born on 12 June 1921 in Nottingham, England. Her mother, who shared an interest in show business and entertainment with her husband, encouraged Garrick to pursue acting. She has two older brothers and attended a Catholic boarding school. Garrick began her career in theatre during the 1940s and by the 1950s had established herself as one of the top British character actresses.
Her Broadway career spanned from 1956 to 1981 and included productions such as Little Moon of Alban, Ulysses in Nighttown, Winners, Abelard and Heloise, and Copperfield, among others. Alongside her stage work, Garrick built a substantial screen career in film and television. She appeared in a 1958 television film adaptation of Johnny Belinda, playing Mrs. Donner opposite Julie Harris and Christopher Plummer. In 1960, she took on the role of the housemaid Gladys in a television film version of Mrs. Miniver, which starred Maureen O'Hara and Leo Genn.
On film, Garrick appeared in Dog Day Afternoon, the 1975 feature starring Al Pacino, in which she played the role of Margaret. The film opened on September 21, 1975, to critical and commercial success, received nominations for six Academy Awards and seven Golden Globe Awards, and won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. In 2009, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry, recognizing it as culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant. Between 1981 and 1983, Garrick appeared in multiple episodes of the American soap opera Guiding Light.
In 1961, Garrick married Bernard Pollock, an actor and stage manager. He died in 2016 at the age of 96. Garrick turned 100 on 12 June 2021 and resides in East Hampton, Suffolk County, New York.
