About

Beulah Bondi (born Beulah Bondy; May 3, 1888 – January 11, 1981) was an American character actress whose Broadway career spanned from 1925 to 1953. Born in Chicago, Illinois, to Eva Suzanna Bondy, an author, and Abraham O. Bondy, a real estate professional, she moved with her family to Valparaiso, Indiana, at age three. Her stage work began at age seven, when she played Cedric Errol in a production of Little Lord Fauntleroy at the Memorial Opera House in Valparaiso. She later graduated from the Frances Shimer Academy in 1907 and earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree in oratory from Valparaiso University, in 1916 and 1918 respectively.

Bondi adopted the surname Bondi and made her Broadway debut on December 21, 1925, in Kenneth Seymour Webb's One of the Family at the 49th Street Theatre. The following year she appeared in Maxwell Anderson's Saturday's Children. Her performance in Elmer Rice's Pulitzer Prize-winning Street Scene, which opened at the Playhouse Theatre on January 10, 1929, brought her to the attention of the film industry. Additional Broadway credits included Hilda Crane, On Borrowed Time, Mother Lode, and The Late Christopher Bean. During 1925 and 1926, alongside her Broadway work, she was also a summer stock cast member at Elitch Theatre.

Her film debut came at age 43, when she reprised her stage role as Emma Jones in the 1931 film version of Street Scene, which starred Sylvia Sidney. She followed that with the role of Mrs. Davidson in Rain (1932), opposite Joan Crawford and Walter Huston. Throughout the 1930s she built a reputation as a character actress, frequently cast in supporting roles as the mothers of leading players. She was among the first five women nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, receiving her first nomination for The Gorgeous Hussy, and a second for Of Human Hearts. One notable departure from her supporting-role pattern was the ensemble film Make Way for Tomorrow (1937), in which she played a lead role as the Depression-era Ma Cooper. She also played Mrs. Webb in Our Town in 1940 and Granny Tucker in The Southerner, directed by Jean Renoir and released in 1945.

Bondi played the mother of James Stewart in four films: Of Human Hearts, Vivacious Lady, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), and It's a Wonderful Life (1946). She was tested for the role of Ma Joad in The Grapes of Wrath and reportedly relocated to Bakersfield, California, to research the part among migrant workers, believing she had secured the role. The part ultimately went to Jane Darwell, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the performance. In 1960, Bondi received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located at 1718 Vine Street.

Her television work included appearances on Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Howard Richardson's Ark of Safety on the Goodyear Television Playhouse, Wagon Train, and a 1963 guest role on Perry Mason as Sophia Stone in "The Case of the Nebulous Nephew." She made two appearances as Martha Corinne Walton on The Waltons, in "The Conflict" in September 1974 and "The Pony Cart" in December 1976. Her performance in "The Pony Cart" earned her the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress for a Single Appearance in a Drama or Comedy Series, which she accepted in person at age 87 to a standing ovation.

A lifelong bachelorette with no children, Bondi stated that she never regretted choosing a career over marriage. She died on January 11, 1981, at age 92, from pulmonary complications resulting from broken ribs sustained when she tripped over her cat at home. Her remains were cremated and her ashes scattered at sea.
