About
Betty Lynn, born Elizabeth Ann Theresa Lynn on August 29, 1926, in Kansas City, Missouri, was an American actress whose career spanned Broadway, film, and television across more than six decades. She died on October 16, 2021, at the age of 95, and is best remembered for her portrayal of Thelma Lou, Deputy Barney Fife's girlfriend, on The Andy Griffith Show.
Lynn was the only child of Elizabeth Ann Lynn and George A. Dailey, a civil engineer who worked for the city of Kansas City and later as a private contractor. Her parents separated and divorced before April 1930, and their marriage had been marked by serious conflict, including reported threats of violence by her father. Following the separation, Lynn and her mother moved in with her maternal grandparents, Josie and George Andrew Lynn, also of Kansas City. Her grandfather, a railroad engineer, became her primary father figure until his death in Sacramento, California, in 1959. Her mother, described as an accomplished mezzo-soprano, introduced Lynn to singing from an early age and enrolled her in the Kansas City Conservatory of Music at age five. Lynn began her professional life in radio, performing in a daytime drama on a Kansas City station.
Her Broadway career ran from 1940 to 1946 and included four productions: the musical Walk with Music, the musical Oklahoma!, the musical Pal Joey, and the play Park Avenue, Ltd. It was during a Broadway production that she was discovered by Darryl F. Zanuck, who signed her to 20th Century Fox. Her contract included a clause permitting the studio to release her at six-month intervals, a condition she found persistently stressful. She made her film debut in Sitting Pretty in 1948, the same year she appeared alongside Bette Davis in June Bride. Subsequent film roles included Mother Is a Freshman in 1949, the original Cheaper by the Dozen in 1950, Payment on Demand in 1951, and Meet Me in Las Vegas in 1956.
Before her film career began, Lynn had participated in a USO tour in the China Burma India Theater during World War II. She was seventeen when she auditioned for the United Service Organizations and eighteen when she joined the tour. Her work included visiting wounded servicemen in military hospitals, where she sang from a repertoire of 725 songs, and she also met recently released prisoners of war from Rangoon.
Lynn's television career began in the early 1950s. She replaced Patricia Kirkland in the role of Betty Blake on the CBS comedy The Egg and I from 1951 to 1952. During the 1953–1954 season, she played June Wallace, the sister-in-law of Ray Bolger's character, on the ABC sitcom Where's Raymond? She appeared as Pearl in the ABC comedy Love That Jill in 1958 and as Viola Slaughter in the ABC Western Texas John Slaughter from 1958 to 1962. She also guest-starred on several series, including Schlitz Playhouse of Stars, The Gale Storm Show, Sugarfoot, and Markham, before being cast as Thelma Lou on The Andy Griffith Show. Lynn held the role from 1961 to 1966, appearing in 26 episodes over five years. She was never formally signed to the show, in part because she remained under contract for Texas John Slaughter at the time of her casting. In 1986, she rejoined former castmates for the NBC reunion film Return to Mayberry, in which Thelma Lou and Barney Fife finally married. Lynn also appeared in an episode of Little House on the Prairie.
In 1950, Lynn purchased a house in Los Angeles, where her mother and grandparents came to live with her. She never married, though she stated she had once been engaged. In 2006, she retired from acting and relocated to Mount Airy, North Carolina, the hometown of Andy Griffith and the town widely believed to have inspired the fictional Mayberry. She continued making monthly appearances at the Andy Griffith Museum in Mount Airy, signing autographs for fans, as recently as July 2019. At the time of her death, she was working on an autobiography intended for posthumous publication.
A devout Roman Catholic, Lynn attended St. Timothy's Catholic Church in Los Angeles throughout her years there, and after her move to Mount Airy she joined Holy Angels Catholic Church. Among her honors, she was inducted into the Missouri Walk of Fame in Marshfield, Missouri, in 2007. On August 30, 2016, North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Dan Forest presented her with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the state's highest civilian honor, granted by Governor Pat McCrory.
