About

Betsy Joslyn, born April 19, 1954, in Staten Island, New York, is a Broadway musical and dramatic actress and soprano whose stage career spans from 1975 through at least 2000. She is married to conductor Mark Mitchell.

Joslyn made her Broadway debut in the original 1979 production of Sweeney Todd, where she began as an ensemble member and understudy for the ingenue role of Johanna before assuming the role itself, succeeding Sarah Rice. Her association with the production extended beyond its Broadway run: she played Johanna on the national tour from 1980 to 1981 and reprised the role for the television production on September 12, 1982. The following year, she took on the role of Nora in A Doll's Life, a production in which she starred.

Her Broadway work continued throughout the 1980s and 1990s across a range of productions. In Sunday in the Park with George, which ran from 1984 to 1985, she served as standby for the roles of Dot and Marie before also performing as Celeste #2, Waitress, and eventually Dot/Marie. During the run of Into the Woods beginning in 1988, she understudied the Witch and Cinderella, later taking over the role of the Witch from July 5 through December of that year. In 1989 she appeared in A Few Good Men as Lt. Cmdr. Joanne Galloway. She played Paula in The Goodbye Girl in 1993 and Patsy in High Society in 1998.

Joslyn also accumulated significant credits on national tour. She portrayed Guenevere in a 1984 touring production of Camelot, Oolie/Donna in City of Angels in 1992, and Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast from 1996 to 1997. She joined the national tour of Into the Woods in May 1989 as the Witch. In 2000, she joined the cast of Les Misérables on Broadway as Madame Thénardier, beginning July 24.

Her off-Broadway career began in 1975 with The Fantasticks, in which she played Luisa. Subsequent off-Broadway appearances included Frances Black in Light Up the Sky at the Roundabout Theatre in 1990, the title role in Colette Collage in 1991, and a revue production of Cabaret Verboten at CSC Repertory Theatre, also in 1991.
