About

Betsy Aidem is an American actress originally from East Meadow, New York, whose career spans stage, film, and television. Her first encounter with acting came during high school, and her debut performance was as a fairy in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. She was previously married to actor William Fichtner, with whom she has a child.

Aidem's stage career has been a defining element of her professional life. Her early theater work included productions of Steel Magnolias and Five Women Wearing the Same Dress. In 2009, she appeared in Nicki Bloom's Tender, directed by Daniela Topol, a play centered on an act of violence and its effect on a family, alongside Kerry Bishé, Michael Cullen, and Matt Dellapina. In October 2018, she took on the role of Professor Carroway in Love Course, a production about two eccentric academics teaching a course in romantic literature. That same year, she expanded her work in theater by directing her first professional production, a George Street Playhouse staging of Lucas Hnath's A Doll's House, Part 2. Her sustained contributions to Off-Broadway work earned her an Obie Award in 2007 for excellence of performance.

Aidem's Broadway career spans from 2014 to 2025 and includes the productions All the Way Home, Liberation, Leopoldstadt, and Prayer for the French Republic. Her performance in Prayer for the French Republic brought her a 2024 Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play.

Her film work began with a small role as a passer-by in the 1982 film A Little Sex, followed by an appearance in the 1985 television film Kojak: The Belarus File as Elissa Barak. Later film credits include The Bleeding House, See You in the Morning, Aeris, and A Vigilante, the 2018 Sarah Daggar-Nickson film starring Olivia Wilde, Morgan Spector, and Kyle Catlett. On television, Aidem held a recurring role as Irene on The High Life and appeared as Dr. Sloane on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. She also appeared in two episodes of The Americans, titled "Safe House" and "Covert War."
