About

Bessie Eyton, born Bessie Harrison on July 5, 1890, was an American actress who built her reputation primarily in silent film before making her Broadway debut in 1919. She was the daughter of musician Edgar Thomas Harrison and Claribel Harrison, née Mead, and had one brother, Elbert Harrison. On September 3, 1908, she married actor Charles Eyton, whose surname she carried professionally throughout her career.

Eyton's entry into film came through an unplanned encounter during a studio tour at Selig Polyscope Company, where a director noticed her and offered her work as an extra. Her screen debut followed in The Sheriff of Tuolomne in 1911, in which she appeared alongside Tom Mix. That first credit marked the beginning of a prolific association with Selig that would last until the studio's closure in 1918, during which time she accumulated approximately 200 film appearances and became one of the company's leading stars. Among her most recognized work from this period are The Spoilers in 1914 and a twelve-reel adaptation of Winston Churchill's novel The Crisis in 1916. Beyond performing, Eyton also contributed to the production side of the industry, receiving a screenwriting credit for the 1914 short The Girl of Gold.

Following Selig's closure, Eyton's screen output declined sharply. Between 1919 and 1925 she appeared in only nine films, the majority produced by independent studios. Her final screen appearance came in The Girl of Gold in 1925, which starred Florence Vidor. It was during this transitional period that Eyton made her sole Broadway appearance, stepping onto the stage in Civilian Clothes, which opened on September 12, 1919.

Her personal life underwent significant changes during these years as well. She divorced Charles Eyton and subsequently married Clark Brewer Coffey on September 29, 1916. That marriage ended in divorce in 1923, and neither union produced children. In 1935, following an argument with her mother, Eyton severed contact with her family and friends entirely, and her whereabouts remained unknown to those who had known her for the remainder of her life. She died on January 22, 1965, in Thousand Oaks, California, and was buried at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura, California.
