About

Beryl Mercer (August 13, 1882 – July 28, 1939) was a Spanish-born British-American actress who worked extensively in stage and screen productions in the United States. Born in Seville to British parents, her father was Edward Sheppard Mercer and her mother was actress Effie Martin.

Mercer began performing as a child, making her stage debut on August 14, 1886, at the Theatre Royal in Great Yarmouth at the age of four. She returned to the stage at age ten and subsequently appeared in London productions including The Darling of the Gods and Oscar Asche's staging of A Midsummer Night's Dream. In 1906, she took on the role of a Kaffir slave in the West End production of The Shulamite, a play that later transferred to the United States and marked her Broadway debut that same year. Her Broadway career continued through 1927 and encompassed productions including Page Pygmalion, Three Live Ghosts, The Old Lady Shows Her Medals, A Bit of Love, and Outward Bound. During World War I, Mercer was honored by Dowager Queen Alexandra for her contributions as an entertainer.

Her film career began with The Christian and spanned more than 50 productions between 1916 and 1939. She became particularly recognized for portraying maternal figures on screen, playing the mother of Lew Ayres' character in All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) and appearing as Ma Powers, James Cagney's mother, in The Public Enemy (1931). Her work extended to grandmother, cook, and maid roles in numerous prominent films. Among her notable screen credits were Cavalcade (1933), Jane Eyre, The Little Minister, and The Richest Girl in the World (all 1934), as well as two film versions of Three Live Ghosts (1929 and 1935) and The Little Princess (1939), in which she portrayed Queen Victoria. Her screen output was especially prolific during the 1930s.

Mercer was married twice, first to Maitland Paisley and later to actor Holmes Herbert in the late 1920s. She had one child, Joan Mercer, later Bitting, born on September 16, 1917. Mercer died on July 28, 1939, in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 56, following surgery for an undisclosed ailment. She was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.
