About

Bertha Mann (October 21, 1893 – December 20, 1967) was an American actress who worked in both stage and film. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, she trained as a dancer during childhood before determining that dramatic performance was a stronger match for her abilities. She began her professional career touring with stock companies as a young actress before establishing herself on Broadway.

Mann's Broadway career spanned from 1914 to 1926. Her stage credits included When Claudia Smiles (1914), When the Young Vine Blooms (1915), The Weavers (1915–1916), One of Us (1918), The Crimson Alibi (1919), The Demi-Virgin, The Man with a Load of Mischief (1925), and The Virgin (1926).

During World War I, Mann was active with the Stage Women's War Relief organization. She learned to knit in order to produce mufflers for American troops and completed a basic nursing course. She also publicly suggested that the film industry developing in Los Angeles could look to the New York theatre community as a model for supporting the war effort.

Mann's film work included The Blindness of Divorce (1918), All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), The Little Accident (1930), Free Love (1930), Caught Cheating (1931), Father's Son (1931), A Woman of Experience (1931), The Final Edition (1932), and Behind the Mask (1932).

In 1928, Mann married actor Raymond Griffith. The couple settled in Los Angeles and raised two children. Griffith died in 1957, leaving Mann widowed. She died on December 20, 1967, in Los Angeles, at the age of 74.
