Bert Grant

Bert Grant (July 12, 1878 – May 9, 1951) was an American composer, pianist, book writer, and Broadway performer born in New York. A charter member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, Grant built a career that spanned both Tin Pan Alley music publishing and Broadway theater.

Grant's work in the commercial music industry brought him into contact with major publishing houses, and his output as a songwriter was substantial. Among his compositions were "If I Knock the 'L' out of Kelly," "Along the Rocky Road to Dublin," "Arrah Go On, I'm Gonna Go Back To Oregon," "Blue Bird," "In the Light of the Same Old Moon," "The Trolley Car Swing," "The Worst Is Yet to Come," "When the Angelus is Ringing," "When The Sun Goes Down In Romany: My Heart Goes Roaming Back To You," and "When You're Away." Seventeen of his songs are preserved in the National Jukebox collection at the Library of Congress.

On Broadway, Grant contributed as both a performer and a creative collaborator. His stage credits included the musicals Cinderella on Broadway, Step This Way, and The Five Million, with his Broadway activity documented as early as 1911. He also served as a book writer in addition to his performing and composing roles. Beyond the stage, Grant performed the first musical broadcast from Roselle Park, New Jersey, marking a notable moment in the early history of radio performance.
