About
Bernice McLaughlin was a Broadway performer whose stage career included an appearance in 1958 in the comedy Auntie Mame.
Auntie Mame was a stage adaptation of Patrick Dennis's 1955 novel, written by playwrights Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. The production opened at the Broadhurst Theatre on October 31, 1956, and ran for 639 performances before closing on June 28, 1958. The show received nominations for four Tony Awards, among them Best Actress for Rosalind Russell and Best Scenic Design for Oliver Smith. Peggy Cass took home the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her portrayal of Agnes Gooch. Russell and Cass both went on to reprise their roles in a 1958 film version, earning Academy Award nominations in the process.
During the Broadway run, several cast changes took place. After Russell's contract concluded, Greer Garson assumed the title role, followed by Beatrice Lillie, who had also starred in the West End production at the Adelphi Theatre. Florence MacMichael succeeded Cass in the role of Agnes Gooch during the Broadway engagement and continued in that role when the production moved to a national tour, which starred Eve Arden. McLaughlin's 1958 appearance in Auntie Mame placed her in the production during this later period of its Broadway run.
