About
Bernard Sauer (1924 – February 13, 1991) was an American stage actor who built his career primarily in Yiddish theater across several decades. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, one of six children in his family, Sauer studied acting in Argentina before making his theatrical debut in 1945 in the play Yoshke, the Musician, which was directed by Joseph Buloff.
By the mid-1960s, Sauer had transitioned to Broadway, where he appeared in two productions between 1966 and 1967. His first Broadway credit was the 1966 play Let's Sing Yiddish, in which he co-starred with Ben Bonus. He followed that with the musical Sing Israel, Sing in 1967. Beyond his Broadway work, Sauer also appeared in Light, Lively and Yiddish in 1970, and in 1971 he toured with a Yiddish repertory company that performed at the Anderson Theater in Manhattan.
During the 1980s, Sauer moved into semi-retirement, though he remained connected to the theater world, contributing behind the scenes to the 1985 musical A Match Made in Heaven. He also held leadership roles within theatrical organizations, serving as a board member of the Yiddish Theatrical Alliance and as president of the Hebrew Actors' Union from 1986 until his death. Sauer died in New York on February 13, 1991, at the age of 67, following a heart attack.
