Bernard Lloyd

Bernard Lloyd (30 January 1934 – 12 December 2018) was a Welsh actor whose career spanned stage, television, and film across several decades. Born with the surname Gibbons, he adopted the professional name Lloyd to distinguish himself from another actor with the same birth name. His formal training included study at the University College of North Staffordshire, the institution that became Keele University in 1962, followed by attendance at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He subsequently performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Lloyd made his Broadway appearance in 1974, performing in London Assurance. His stage work was complemented by an extensive television career that began with the series Redcap in 1965. Among his notable television roles, he portrayed William Holman Hunt in The Love School, a 1975 drama centered on the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The following year he appeared in the Ghost Story for Christmas adaptation of The Signalman, based on the Charles Dickens short story, playing the Traveller who attempts to understand the predicament faced by Denholm Elliott's signalman character.

Lloyd's television credits also included Hitler's SS: Portrait in Evil, Inspector Morse, Agatha Christie's Poirot, and Lewis. In 1999 he took on the role of Jacob Marley's ghost in a television film adaptation of A Christmas Carol. His film work included a role as the archbishop in the 2009 feature The Young Victoria.
