About
Benedict Campbell, born June 12, 1957, is a Canadian actor whose career has spanned stage, television, animation voice work, and video games. He made his Broadway appearance in 2004 in King Lear. Campbell comes from a distinguished theatrical family: his parents are actors Douglas Campbell and Ann Casson, and his maternal grandparents are Sir Lewis Casson and Dame Sybil Thorndike. His brother is Dirk Campbell, and his daughter is actress Deragh Campbell.
While working in England, Campbell met Jackie Maxwell, who was employed as an usher at Contact Theatre. The two married, and after Campbell received an offer to appear in Troilus and Cressida at the National Arts Centre, the couple relocated to Canada.
Much of Campbell's stage career was built at Canada's Stratford Festival, where he performed between 1965 and 2000. His Stratford credits include the title role in Hamlet in 2000, Marcus Antonius in Julius Caesar in 1998, Friar Laurence in Romeo and Juliet in 1997, Hortensio in The Taming of the Shrew in 1997, Banquo in Macbeth in 1995, Cloten in Cymbeline in 1986, Young Shepherd in The Winter's Tale in 1986, Edmund in King Lear in 1985, Antonio in Twelfth Night in 1985, Demetrius in A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1984, Ferdinand in Love's Labour's Lost in 1984, and Arragon in The Merchant of Venice in 1984. His earliest Stratford credit dates to 1965, when he played Page to Falstaff in Falstaff (Henry IV, Part II).
Campbell's screen work in live-action productions includes a recurring role as Lorne Cassidy on Street Legal from 1992 to 1993, an appearance in the television film The Sheldon Kennedy Story in 1999, a role in the series Slings and Arrows in 2005, and a guest appearance as Judge Richardson in Republic of Doyle in 2014. Earlier credits include Zero Patience in 1993, A Holiday to Remember in 1995, and Dromio of Syracuse in The Boys from Syracuse in 1986.
A substantial portion of Campbell's career has been devoted to voice acting. He served as narrator for Freaky Stories in 1997 and voiced King K. Rool in Donkey Kong Country from 1997 to 2000, a role he reprised in DKC: Return to Krocodile Isle in 2023. Additional animation credits include Principal Coffin in Stickin' Around in 1996, Papa Q. Bear in The Berenstain Bears from 2002 to 2003, multiple characters in Noddy in 1998, Martin the Warrior, King Bull Sparra, and Darkclaw in Redwall in 1999, Samuel in Friends and Heroes in 2007, Sir Ivon Mackay and Chamberlain Milton Turnkey in Jane and the Dragon in 2006, and Arktos and Little Arktos in Ice Princess Lily in 2018. He also contributed additional voices to Monster Force in 1994, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective in 1996, Mythic Warriors: Guardians of the Legend from 1998 to 2000, and Babar and the Adventures of Badou from 2010 to 2011, and voiced Don Vincente Marino Ramírez in Highlander: The Animated Series from 1994 to 1995.
