About
Benedick Bates is a British actor born in November 1970. The son of actor Sir Alan Bates and actress Victoria Ward, he received his formal training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
Before reaching Broadway, Bates built his stage career across a range of prominent British theatrical venues and companies. His work with the Glasgow Citizens Company, the Chichester Festival Theatre, and the Edinburgh Festival established him as a versatile stage performer. He also appeared in London's West End in productions including Don Carlos, Romeo and Juliet, The Return of A. J. Raffles, The Rose Tattoo, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Semi-Monde.
In 2002, Bates made his Broadway debut in Fortune's Fool, an adaptation of Ivan Turgenev's work, performing opposite his father, Sir Alan Bates.
Bates has a personal connection to the Tristan Bates Theatre, located at the Actors Centre in London. The venue was established in memory of his twin brother Tristan, who was also an actor and who died in Tokyo in 1990 following an ingestion of alcohol and either opium or heroin. Benedick Bates serves as a vice-president of the theatre that bears his brother's name.
