About

Ben Chaplin, born Benedict John Greenwood on 31 July 1969 in Windsor, Berkshire, England, is a British actor known for work across stage, film, and television. The son of Cynthia Chaplin, a teacher, and Peter Greenwood CBE, a civil engineer, he has one sister, Rachel, and one brother, Justin. His interest in acting developed during his school years at the Princess Margaret Royal Free School, and at seventeen he enrolled at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Before establishing himself as a professional actor, he worked in various jobs, including as a statistician with the London Transport Authority. He adopted his stage name from his mother's maiden name.

Chaplin began his professional career in BBC television dramas and occasional film productions. His first major role came in 1992, when he starred alongside Jason Flemyng in Bye Bye Baby for Channel Four. That same year, James Ivory and Ismail Merchant cast him as a servant in The Remains of the Day, and he also appeared in the television series Between the Lines. He played the lead role of Matthew in the first series of the BBC Two sitcom Game On in 1995, departing after one series. Also in 1995, he appeared as the socially inept Con Wainwright in Feast of July, and his stage performance as Tom Wingfield in Sam Mendes' production of The Glass Menagerie earned him an Olivier Award nomination for Best Supporting Performer.

His American film career began with Michael Lehmann's romantic comedy The Truth About Cats and Dogs (1996), in which he played a photographer caught between characters portrayed by Uma Thurman and Janeane Garofalo. He next appeared as fortune-hunting Morris Townsend in Washington Square (1997), co-starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, followed by the role of Private Bell in Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line (1998). The apocalyptic horror film Lost Souls, filmed in 1998, was released in 2000 after numerous delays. He played an introverted bank clerk opposite Nicole Kidman in Birthday Girl (2001) and appeared alongside Sandra Bullock in Murder by Numbers (2002). Further film credits include Stage Beauty (2004), in which he portrayed George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham; a supporting role in Chromophobia (2005); a small part in Malick's The New World (2005); and the portrayal of actor George Coulouris in Richard Linklater's Me and Orson Welles (2009). Additional film appearances include Two Weeks (2006), The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep (2007), London Boulevard (2010), Twixt (2011), War Book (2014), Snowden (2016), and September 5 (2024).

On Broadway, Chaplin appeared in The Retreat from Moscow in 2003, a credit that earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play in 2004. His stage work has also included This Is How It Goes at the Donmar Warehouse in 2005, The Reporter at the National Theatre in 2007, Farewell to the Theatre at the Hampstead Theatre in 2012, the premiere production of Consent at the Royal National Theatre in 2017, and Joe Penhall's Mood Music at The Old Vic Theatre.

Chaplin's television work spans several decades, beginning with Soldier Soldier in 1991. He portrayed Thomas Langley in the miniseries World Without End (2012), adapted from the Ken Follett novel of the same name. He appeared in the Channel 4 series Dates in 2013 and starred opposite Charlotte Riley in the BBC series Press, playing tabloid editor Duncan Allen. His television credits also include The Nevers, in which he appeared from 2021 to 2023. Additional credits include Apple Tree Yard (2017), in which he starred alongside Emily Watson, and The Children Act (2017), adapted from the Ian McEwan novel.
