Rebecca Lynn Gulsvig was born on August 25, 1982, in Moorhead, Minnesota, to Patricia Kay (née Nelson) and Kristofer Gulsvig. Her mother works as a teacher and her father as a financial advisor. Gulsvig is of Norwegian heritage and grew up in Moorhead, where she attended Moorhead High School, Trollwood Performing Arts School, and trained with the Red River Dance and Performing Company. After graduating high school at 17, Gulsvig relocated to New York City. Her first professional role was as Wendy in a touring production of Peter Pan. She made her Broadway debut in Hairspray, playing Amber Von Tussle, before joining the original Broadway company of Legally Blonde, where she originated the role of Leilani and served as understudy for the roles of Elle Woods, Serena, and Margot. She performed the song "So Much Better" live at the 2009 Tony Awards ceremony. When the North American national tour of Legally Blonde launched in September 2008, Gulsvig stepped into the lead role of Elle Woods, a position she held until the tour concluded in August 2010.
