About
John "Beau" Billingslea was born in 1944 in Charleston, South Carolina. His mother was originally from Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, and his father from Macon, Georgia. The family relocated to Meriden, Connecticut, where Billingslea was raised. At Maloney High School, he earned letters in football, basketball, and baseball and received a contract offer from the Kansas City Athletics. Following his father's counsel, he instead enrolled at the University of Connecticut, where he played football and served as co-captain during his senior year, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1966. His ROTC involvement led to a deferred military commitment that allowed him to attend UConn Law School, from which he graduated and passed the Connecticut bar in 1969. He subsequently served as an officer in the Army's Judge Advocate General's Corps, completing tours in Germany and Europe and handling a range of legal cases. During his time in Germany, he also taught criminal law through the University of Maryland's extension program.
Billingslea's interest in acting was sparked during his college years when a fraternity brother encouraged him to take the lead role in a production of The Emperor Jones. He began pursuing the craft professionally while still in law school. His Broadway career includes an appearance in 1968 in The Great White Hope. After settling in Los Angeles, he built a substantial television résumé that included TJ Hooker, Hunter, The Fall Guy, The A-Team, Who's the Boss?, Murphy Brown, and Married with Children. He portrayed Ezra in the television miniseries North and South Book II: Love and War and played Jordan's maternal grandfather Grant on the Nickelodeon series Just Jordan. In the sitcom Franklin & Bash, he portrayed Judge Douglas. His film work encompasses Night Shift, The American President, Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, a remake of The Blob, and The Hannah Montana Movie. In 2013, he appeared in Star Trek Into Darkness as Captain Abbot of the Starship Bradbury. His stage work has continued into later years, including a production of Driving Miss Daisy for which he received a Los Angeles Ovation Award nomination in 2005.
Billingslea has also maintained an extensive voice-over career, beginning with radio spots for clients including Honda, Hood, and the California Highway Patrol. His most recognized voice role is Jet Black in the anime series Cowboy Bebop, broadcast on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block. Additional anime credits include Captain Michael Heartland in Argento Soma, Oji Tanaka in The Legend of Black Heaven, Ogremon and various characters in Digimon, and both Homura and Ay, the Fourth Raikage, in Naruto Shippuden. He attended the 2016 Anime Expo, which brought together the English voice cast of Cowboy Bebop. His narration work includes History Channel programming such as Hero Ships, Modern Marvels, and Suicide Missions.
In 1987, Billingslea was inducted into the Meriden Hall of Fame. In 2014, he delivered the keynote address at a UConn Law School reunion. He lives in the Los Angeles area with his wife, Cecelia Billingslea, and their son and daughter.
