Born Bernice Frankel on May 13, 1922, in Brooklyn, New York, Bea Arthur was the daughter of Rebecca and Philip Frankel. After attending Blackstone College, she relocated to New York to study at the Dramatic Workshop of the New School for Social Research. Her first marriage was to Robert Alan Aurthur; she later married actor and director Gene Saks, with whom she had two sons, Matthew and Daniel.

Her film credits include "History of the World: Part I," "Mame," "Lovers and Other Strangers," "That Kind of Woman," "For Better or Worse," and "Enemies of Laughter." On television, she appeared in "The Golden Girls," "Maude," "Saturday Night Live," "Malcolm in the Middle," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Futurama," "All in the Family," and "Empty Nest."

Bea Arthur won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series twice — for "Maude" in 1977 and for "The Golden Girls" in 1988.

Broadway theater marquees were dimmed in her honor on April 28, 2009.
