About
Basil Gill (10 March 1877 – 23 April 1955) was a British stage and film actor born in Birkenhead, England, and the son of the Reverend John Gill of Cambridge. His career spanned several decades and encompassed Shakespearean roles, romantic leads in modern plays, and an extensive body of film work.
Gill made his first stage appearance in Bury, Lancashire in 1897, performing in Wilson Barrett's The Sign of the Cross. The following year he brought the same production to London, and subsequently toured Australia and the United States in both The Sign of the Cross and Ben-Hur. In 1903 he joined Herbert Beerbohm Tree's company at His Majesty's Theatre in London, where he took on several significant roles in Shakespeare's plays over the next four years before departing the company in 1907. Throughout his career he continued to perform in Shakespearean productions into the 1930s, while also establishing himself as a matinée idol in romantic parts in contemporary plays.
His Broadway career ran from 1912 to 1928 and included appearances in Macbeth, The Secret Room, and The Daughter of Heaven. These credits reflected the range he demonstrated on stage, moving between classical material and newer dramatic works.
Gill's film career began with Henry VIII in 1911, a production connected to Beerbohm Tree, on whose stage version the film was based. In 1926 he appeared in two short films produced using the De Forest Phonofilm sound-on-film process: Santa Claus, in which he played the title role, and Julius Caesar, in which he portrayed Brutus. His subsequent film appearances included The School for Scandal (1930), Mrs. Dane's Defence (1933), Rembrandt (1936), I, Claudius (1937), and St Martin's Lane (1938), among many others. His final film credit was The Citadel in 1938. Gill died on 23 April 1955.
