About
Baruch Lumet (also known as Burech Lumet) was an American actor and book writer born on September 16, 1898, in Warsaw, then part of Congress Poland, to a Yiddish-speaking Jewish family. He immigrated to the United States in 1922 with his wife, Eugenia Gitl Lumet (née Wermus), and their daughter Felicia (1920–1980). His son, film director Sidney Lumet (1924–2011), was born after the family's arrival in America. Lumet died on February 8, 1992.
His career was rooted primarily in the Yiddish theatre, though his Broadway work spanned more than three decades, from 1934 to 1966. His stage credits included Once Upon a Tailor, The Eternal Road, The Chinese Nightingale, and Fiddler on the Roof. From 1953 to 1960, Lumet served as director of the Dallas Institute of Performing Arts and the Knox Street Theater in Dallas, where his students included actress Jayne Mansfield and filmmaker Tobe Hooper.
Despite his stage focus, Lumet made a number of film appearances across his career. He appeared alongside his son Sidney in the 1939 film One Third of a Nation and later took character roles in two of Sidney's productions: The Pawnbroker (1964) and The Group (1966). He also appeared in Woody Allen's comedy Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask, cast as an elderly rabbi.
