About
Barry Pearl is an American character actor born on March 29, 1950, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, whose career has spanned Broadway, film, and television. Raised in an Orthodox Jewish family, Pearl grew up celebrating both Hanukkah and Christmas, as two of his aunts were married to Christians.
Pearl's Broadway career began in 1961 when he replaced Johnny Borden in the role of Randolph MacAfee in Bye Bye Birdie. Subsequent stage credits include Oliver! in 1962, A Teaspoon Every Four Hours in 1969, and the play Oliver Oliver. He returned to Broadway with The Producers in 2005, followed by Lenny's Back in 2008 and Baby It's You! in 2011, with his Broadway work spanning from 1960 to 2011. He also starred in Cheers Live on Stage.
Beyond Broadway, Pearl is perhaps most widely recognized for portraying Doody, one of the three supporting T-Birds, in the 1978 film adaptation of Grease. He revisited the Grease universe in 2016 with a cameo appearance as Mr. Weaver in the FOX television special Grease: Live. In 2012, he appeared in the Lionsgate release The Newest Pledge, and he was part of the 2014 series Summer with Cimorelli.
Pearl's additional credits include playing Professor Tinkerputt in the primetime special Barney's Imagination Island and in the U.S. tour of Barney's Big Surprise, a stage production connected to the popular television series. He also portrayed Arnold in the national tour of Happy Days: A New Musical and appeared in an episode of Disney Channel's Even Stevens.
Outside of performing, Pearl teaches film arts to the special needs community across the United States through Joey Travolta's Inclusion Film Company.
