Barry McEvoy

Barry McEvoy is a Northern Irish actor, writer, and performer born on July 11, 1967, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He is recognized across stage and screen, with a career spanning Broadway, Off-Broadway, and international film productions.

Before establishing himself in theater and film, McEvoy served as the lead singer of Phlegm, a punk band based in Washington, D.C., that released multiple records during the 1980s before disbanding in 1988. He subsequently spent approximately a decade performing in Off-Broadway productions in New York City, during which time he also appeared on Broadway between 1993 and 1995. His Broadway credits include On the Waterfront and The Sisters Rosensweig.

McEvoy's transition to film began with a supporting role as a gangster in Gloria (1999), his first notable screen appearance. He also appeared in Gettysburg (1993). His most prominent work in film came with An Everlasting Piece (2000), for which he both wrote the screenplay and played the lead role. The film was directed by Barry Levinson and drew on the real-life experiences of McEvoy's father, who sold toupées to customers on both sides of the sectarian divide in Belfast during the height of the conflict there. Subsequent film appearances include Veronica Guerin (2003), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006), and Five Minutes of Heaven (2009).

McEvoy has continued to write screenplays and periodically performs in theatrical productions in both Ireland and the United States. He lives in Dublin with his wife and son.
