About
Barry Flatman, born March 12, 1950, is a Canadian actor whose career spans television, film, stage, and voice work. He made his Broadway appearance in Irving Berlin's White Christmas, running from 2008 to 2009.
Flatman launched his professional career as a member of the comedy troupe Homemade Theatre Company, through which he joined the cast of the CBC Television sketch comedy series Stay Tuned, which aired from 1976 to 1977. He subsequently became a regular on the CTV and Showtime sketch comedy series Bizarre, appearing throughout its run from 1980 to 1986. During this same period, he took on supporting roles in the films The Dead Zone (1983) and Switching Channels (1988), and played the main role of Bob Quimby on the CHCH series Ramona from 1988 to 1989.
In the 1990s, Flatman contributed voice performances to the Fox Kids animated series X-Men, running from 1992 to 1997, where he voiced Marvel Comics characters Vindicator and Henry Peter Gyrich across multiple episodes. His film work during the decade included a supporting part in The Cutting Edge (1992) and a role in the 1995 television film Almost Golden: The Jessica Savitch Story, in which he portrayed Richard Taylor, a character based on news anchor Mort Crim. He also took on a recurring role as President Daniel Thompson on the CTV and NewNet series Earth: Final Conflict from 1998 to 2000.
The 2000s brought Flatman a range of prominent television and film roles. He appeared in the Italian film My Name Is Tanino (2002) and had supporting parts in the comedy film Just Friends (2005) and the horror film Saw III (2006). On television, he held main roles as Cam Ritchie in the CBC miniseries H2O (2004) and Chuck Beeter in the A&E miniseries The Andromeda Strain (2008), and a recurring role as Police Captain Bill Carruthers on the ESPN series Tilt (2005).
In the 2010s, Flatman appeared in the films The Returned (2013) and No Stranger Than Love (2015), and portrayed Darryl F. Zanuck in the Lifetime biographical miniseries The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe (2015). He held a recurring role as Wally Semenchko in the first season of the FX anthology series Fargo (2014), and played Don Shade on the Global series Private Eyes from 2016 to 2021. In 2023, he appeared on stage as Jonas in Jonas & Barry in the Home.
