About
Leonard Barrie Corbin was born on October 16, 1940. His mother chose his middle name as a tribute to author Sir James M. Barrie. Corbin grew up in Lubbock, Texas, where he attended Monterey High School. Though he briefly played football in eighth grade, he shifted his focus to the arts, pursuing acting and ballet. He went on to study theater arts at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. At age 21, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served two years before returning to Texas Tech to continue his studies.
Corbin launched his professional career in the 1960s as a Shakespearean actor, and in 1969 he appeared on Broadway in King Henry V. His early classical training shaped a career that would span decades across stage, film, and television, with Corbin frequently cast as authority figures including sheriffs, military leaders, and stern patriarchs, though he has also taken on villainous roles on occasion.
His film work includes Urban Cowboy (1980), in which he played John Travolta's uncle Bob Davis, and Stir Crazy (1980). He appeared alongside Clint Eastwood in Any Which Way You Can and portrayed General Beringer in WarGames (1983). In 2007, he had a role in No Country for Old Men.
On television, Corbin appeared in several episodes of Dallas between 1979 and 1984 as Sheriff Fenton Washburn. In 1983, he co-starred in the miniseries The Thorn Birds as Pete, Mary Carson's stockman who teaches the Clearys' sons sheep shearing at the Australian station Drogheda. That same year, he played Merit Sawyer, a stern father, in the series Boone, which was cancelled after ten episodes, and portrayed Franz Grebner, Chief of Investigation for Fort Bragg, in the miniseries Fatal Vision. In 1989, he appeared in the acclaimed Western miniseries Lonesome Dove as Roscoe Brown, the bumbling deputy to July Johnson.
From 1990 to 1995, Corbin starred as Maurice Minnifield, a former astronaut and local business leader, on Northern Exposure. The role earned him two consecutive Primetime Emmy Award nominations and remains among his most recognized work. In 1994, he narrated the television documentary MoonShot, recounting the 1960s space race from the perspective of Mercury Seven astronaut Deke Slayton. From 2003 to 2009, he played basketball coach Whitey Durham on One Tree Hill, and from 2007 to 2012 he appeared in the recurring role of Clay Johnson, father of Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, on The Closer. He also appeared in The Ranch on Netflix, Yellowstone in 2021, Tulsa King in 2022, and had a recurring guest role as Everett Acker in Better Call Saul in 2020.
In 2003, Corbin co-starred with Northern Exposure castmate John Cullum in the short film Blackwater Elegy, written by Matthew Porter and co-directed by Porter and Joe O'Brien. He also lent his voice to a series of video games developed by Westwood Studios, playing General Carville in Red Alert: Retaliation (1998), Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 (2000), and Command & Conquer: Yuri's Revenge (2001).
Corbin is the signature voice of Fort Worth radio station KPLX and has voiced trailers and promotions for CMT and various country radio stations. In 2014, he became the spokesman for the Texas Veterans Land Board and was inducted into the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum. The Texas Film Hall of Fame inducted him on March 8, 2012, and in September 2011 he received a lifetime achievement award from the Estes Park Film Festival in Estes Park, Colorado.
In his personal life, Corbin has competed in cutting-horse competitions and spends time riding horses and tending cattle on his ranch near Fort Worth. He has served as a spokesman for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, a cause connected to his own experience with the condition, which caused him to lose most of his hair in the 1990s. He has also volunteered at charity rodeos and participated in the Lubbock centennial in 2006.
