About

Barrie Stanton Ingham (10 February 1932 – 23 January 2015) was an English actor born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, to Irene (née Bolton) and Harold Ellis Stead Ingham. He attended Heath Grammar School before serving as a Royal Artillery officer. His career spanned television, film, and stage work across Britain, the United States, and Australia, encompassing more than 200 productions.

Ingham began his acting career with the Library Theatre Company in Manchester before relocating to London, where he joined the Old Vic. He subsequently worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Mermaid Theatre Company, and the Royal National Theatre. His stage work extended to Australia, where he appeared in Noël Coward's Private Lives in Sydney in 1976.

It was Sir John Gielgud who gave Ingham his Broadway debut, launching a stage career in New York that spanned from 1959 to 1997. Among his Broadway credits were Copperfield and Me and My Girl. He earned recognition for his portrayal of King Pellinore in the 1981–82 Broadway revival of Camelot, which starred Richard Harris. In 1991–92, he appeared in the final Broadway cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Aspects of Love, opposite Sarah Brightman. His final Broadway engagement was Jekyll & Hyde, in which he played Sir Danvers Carew, opening the production in 1997 and remaining with it through its closing in January 2001. He also appeared in the 2001 film adaptation of that musical.

Ingham's screen work included the lead role of Robin Hood in A Challenge for Robin Hood (1967) and the role of Sejanus in Granada Television's The Caesars (1968). He appeared as an ambitious government minister in The Power Game in 1969 and took the title role in the 1971 series Hine, playing an unscrupulous arms dealer. In 1986, he provided the voice of Basil of Baker Street, the central character in Disney's The Great Mouse Detective. He also appeared opposite Angela Lansbury in the London production of Gypsy: A Musical Fable in 1973, though he did not transfer with the production to Broadway.

Ingham married Tarne Phillips Ingham in 1957, and together they had four children. He died at his home in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, at the age of 82, survived by his wife and their children.
