About
Barney Bernard (August 18, 1877–March 21, 1924) was an American stage and screen actor born in Rochester, New York, whose Broadway career spanned from 1907 to 1922.
A natural physical quality worked in Bernard's favor throughout his career: he consistently appeared older than his actual age, which made him well suited to portray aging ethnic Jewish characters on stage. This quality helped define the types of roles he pursued and the partnerships he formed over the course of his theatrical life.
Bernard's Broadway work began with an appearance in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1907, placing him among the earliest performers in that celebrated revue series. He subsequently appeared in a range of productions including Arms and the Girl, Bow-Sing, and the musical Vera Violetta, the latter featuring Gaby Deslys. His stage work also brought him into productions alongside notable performers of the era, including appearances in La Belle Paree (1911) with Kitty Gordon, The Whirl of Society (1912) with José Collins, and collaborations with Al Jolson across several musical productions. His Broadway credits further included Business Before Pleasure among other productions.
The defining chapter of Bernard's stage career began in 1913 when he formed an onstage partnership with actor Alexander Carr. The two starred together in Potash and Perlmutter, a production that proved a significant success and established Bernard as a recognizable name in American theater.
Bernard also worked in film, appearing in Intolerance (1916), Phantom Fortunes (1916), A Prince in a Pawnshop (1916), and the screen adaptation of Potash and Perlmutter in 1923, again alongside Carr. He died on March 21, 1924, while in preparation to co-star with Carr in a sequel to that film, which was to be titled In Hollywood with Potash and Perlmutter. Actor George Sidney was subsequently brought in to take Bernard's place as the character Abe Potash.
