About
Barbara Townsend (August 4, 1913 – January 29, 2002) was an American actress born in Oakland, California, whose career spanned Broadway, film, and television across several decades. She appeared on Broadway between 1937 and 1966, with credits including The Rose Tattoo and As You Like It.
On television, Townsend accumulated an extensive list of guest appearances beginning in the late 1950s. Her earliest documented television work includes a 1957 episode of Highway Patrol, in which she played a landlady, and a 1957 episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, where she appeared as a secretary. Over the following decades she took on recurring and guest roles across a wide range of series, among them The Streets of San Francisco, Little House on the Prairie, Remington Steele, Knight Rider, Highway to Heaven, Mr. Belvedere, St. Elsewhere, and Hunter.
Townsend became particularly recognized for her role as Mildred Potter in the television series AfterMASH. Her later television work included appearances on Mama's Family, Quantum Leap, Civil Wars, Northern Exposure, and two separate episodes of Murder, She Wrote, in 1989 and 1993.
Her film credits include One Good Cop, Hard to Kill, and Annihilator. Townsend died on January 29, 2002.
