About
Barbara Leigh-Hunt (14 December 1935 – 16 September 2024) was an English actress born in Bath, Somerset, England. She worked across theatre, film, and television over the course of a career spanning several decades, with stage work that included productions with the Bristol Old Vic, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the Royal National Theatre.
Leigh-Hunt made her Broadway appearances between 1954 and 1974, with credits that included Hamlet (1958), Sherlock Holmes (1973), and Justice (1974), as well as productions of King Henry V and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Her stage work extended well beyond Broadway, and in 1993 she received the Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress for the National Theatre production of An Inspector Calls.
Her film career included a role in Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy (1972), in which she played a woman raped and strangled by a serial killer. The film was Hitchcock's penultimate feature and contained the first graphically violent scene with visible nudity of his career. That same year she appeared as Catherine Parr in Henry VIII and His Six Wives (1972), and she followed those roles with Bequest to the Nation (1973) and Oh Heavenly Dog (1980). Later film appearances included Paper Mask (1990), Keep the Aspidistra Flying (1997), Billy Elliot (2000), The Martins (2001), and Vanity Fair (2004).
On television, Leigh-Hunt portrayed the Queen of Bavaria in the 1983 miniseries Wagner, appearing alongside Ralph Richardson, Laurence Olivier, and John Gielgud, with Richard Burton in the title role as composer Richard Wagner. Her husband, Richard Pasco, also appeared in the production. She played Jean Lawrence in the BBC drama Tumbledown (1988) and Lady Catherine de Bourgh in the 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. In 1999 she starred as Lady Cumnor in the BBC four-part series Wives and Daughters. She also provided voice work, including the farmer's wife in The Plague Dogs (1982) and the characters Captain Mildred and Mary the Hover Fairy in the 1987 children's series Charlie Chalk.
Leigh-Hunt married actor Richard Pasco in 1967; he died in 2014. Her cousin was the actor Ronald Leigh-Hunt. She died on 16 September 2024 in Aston Cantlow, Warwickshire, at the age of 88.
