About
Barbara Feldon, born Barbara Anne Hall on March 12, 1933, in Butler, Pennsylvania, is an American actress whose career has spanned television, film, and Broadway. She is the daughter of Raymond Dorsey and Julia Stewart Hall, and grew up alongside her older sister Patricia. After graduating from Bethel Park High School, she trained at Pittsburgh Playhouse before earning a Bachelor of Arts in drama from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1955, where she was initiated into the Delta Xi chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She later continued her acting training at HB Studio in New York.
Feldon's professional career began with modeling work before a Revlon television commercial for a men's hair pomade called Top Brass brought her to wider public attention. The ad, in which she addressed male viewers as tigers while reclining on an animal-print rug, led to guest appearances on several television series during the 1960s, including Twelve O'Clock High, Flipper, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and the CBS drama Mr. Broadway. A notable guest role opposite George C. Scott in East Side/West Side connected her to Talent Associates, the production company that was simultaneously developing the television comedy Get Smart with writers Mel Brooks and Buck Henry.
Feldon was cast as Agent 99 in Get Smart, starring opposite Don Adams, who played Maxwell Smart, Secret Agent 86. She held the role for the entirety of the show's run from 1965 to 1970 and received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, in 1968 and 1969. The character was notable for the period in that she consistently demonstrated competence and intelligence within a demanding professional setting. Feldon made five guest appearances on The Dean Martin Show between 1968 and 1972, performing in comedy sketches, singing, and dancing, and also appeared on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. She reprised the role of Agent 99 in the 1989 television film Get Smart, Again! and in a short-lived 1995 revival of the series. In 2006, she wrote and recorded audio commentaries and introductions for the DVD release of the original series.
Throughout the 1970s, Feldon guest-starred in multiple television series, including The Carol Burnett Show, McMillan and Wife, The Name of the Game, and Lorne Greene's Griff. Her television movies during this period included Getting Away from It All (1972) with Larry Hagman, Let's Switch! (1975) with Barbara Eden, Before and After (1979) with Patty Duke, and A Vacation in Hell (1979) with Maureen McCormick and Priscilla Barnes. She also provided the voice of Patti Bear in the 1973 animated special The Bear Who Slept Through Christmas. In 1991, she appeared in the Cheers episode Sam Time Next Year as Lauren Hudson, and in 1993 she guest-starred in a season one episode of Mad About You as a character named Diane Caldwell. On January 1, 1978, she served as Bob Eubanks's first co-host of the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena.
Her feature film credits include Fitzwilly (1967), Smile (1975), No Deposit, No Return (1976), and Last Request (2006), the latter featuring T. R. Knight, Danny Aiello, and Joe Piscopo. On Broadway, Feldon was active between 1960 and 1980, appearing in Caligula and starring in Past Tense. She also appeared at Denver's Elitch Theatre in What I Did Last Summer in 1982.
In 1957, prior to her acting career gaining momentum, Feldon won the grand prize on The $64,000 Question in the category of William Shakespeare. Her surname derives from her 1958 marriage to Lucien Verdoux-Feldon; the couple divorced in 1967. She subsequently maintained a twelve-year relationship with Get Smart producer Burt Nodella before relocating to New York City, where she was still residing as of 2024. Feldon has also worked as a writer, publishing Living Alone and Loving It in 2003 and Getting Smarter: A Memoir in 2021, and contributing editorial pieces to Metropolitan Magazine in 2015.
