About
Barbara Isabel Bryne (née Birkinshaw; 1 April 1929 – 2 May 2023) was a British-American actress who worked across theatre, film, and television. Born in London, England, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before building a career that spanned decades on both sides of the Atlantic.
Bryne relocated to Canada in the early 1960s and became a regular presence at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario, beginning in 1966. She also maintained a long association with the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota, performing there for approximately 50 years. Her stage work at the Guthrie included productions of Mother Courage, The Glass Menagerie, She Stoops to Conquer, Design for Living, and Pygmalion.
Her Broadway career ran from 1984 to 1997 and encompassed both plays and musicals. She appeared in the original Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George, playing George's mother, and in the original Broadway production of Into the Woods, in which she portrayed Jack's mother. She also appeared on Broadway in the play Hay Fever. In addition to her Broadway work, Bryne performed in Sondheim's A Little Night Music in Washington, D.C.
On television, Bryne played Mrs. Gaffney on the Tony Randall series Love, Sidney, which ran from 1981 to 1983. In 2011 she appeared as Queen Victoria in a production of H.M.S. Pinafore filmed for PBS. Her film credits include Amadeus (1984), The Bostonians (1984), Two Evil Eyes (1990), the television film Into the Woods (1991), Romeo & Juliet (1993), and the television film Sunday in the Park with George (1986), as well as The School for Scandal (1975).
In 1982, Bryne received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Drama for her portrayal of Kath in the first American production of Joe Orton's Entertaining Mr. Sloane, which starred Maxwell Caulfield in the title role. Bryne married Dennis Spence in 1953, and the two remained married for 55 years until his death in 2018. She died on 2 May 2023 in Minneapolis at the age of 94.
