About

Austin Robert Butler, born on August 17, 1991, in Anaheim, California, is an American actor whose work spans television, film, and stage. The son of Lori Anne Butler, an aesthetician, and David Butler, who is of Irish descent, he grew up in Anaheim before his parents divorced when he was seven. He has an older sister, Ashley, born in 1986, who worked alongside him as a background actress on Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide. His maternal lineage includes Finnish immigrants from Ostrobothnia, Finland — great-great-grandparents Matti Matinpoika Sillanpää and Liisa Jaakontytär Järvelä — who settled in Wisconsin. Butler attended public school through the seventh grade, at which point he transitioned to homeschooling to accommodate his work schedule, continuing through the tenth grade before passing the California High School Proficiency Exam.

Butler's entry into the entertainment industry came at age thirteen, when a representative from a background acting management company approached him at the Orange County Fair. After working as an extra on series including Unfabulous and Drake & Josh, he secured his first regular role in 2005 as Zippy Brewster on Nickelodeon's Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide. A connection made on that show — through his friend Lindsey Shaw, who introduced him to manager Pat Cutler — helped launch his professional career in earnest. He went on to guest star on Hannah Montana in May 2007, playing Derek Hanson opposite Miley Cyrus, and later that year appeared on iCarly as Jake Krandle. In February 2008, he joined Zoey 101 in a main role as James Garrett, the love interest of Jamie Lynn Spears's title character in the show's fourth season, having previously guest starred in the third season as a different character.

Butler's television career expanded steadily through the early 2010s. He took on a recurring role as Jones on The CW's Life Unexpected beginning in February 2010, and in 2011 joined ABC Family's Switched at Birth as Wilke. He starred in The CW's Sex and the City prequel series The Carrie Diaries from 2013 to 2014, playing Sebastian Kydd, a character attending the same high school as Carrie Bradshaw in the 1980s-set drama based on Candace Bushnell's novel. From 2016 to 2017, he starred as Wil Ohmsford in The Shannara Chronicles, MTV's television adaptation of Terry Brooks's novel The Elfstones of Shannara, before that series was also cancelled after two seasons. His film work during this period included the 2009 family adventure Aliens in the Attic, in which he played Jake Pearson alongside Ashley Tisdale and Kevin Nealon, and the 2011 Lifetime television film The Bling Ring, in which he played the lead role of Zack Garvey.

Prior to his Broadway debut, Butler also developed his stage work in Los Angeles. In 2014, he appeared at the Geffen Playhouse in Death of the Author, directed by Bart DeLorenzo and written by Steven Drukman, playing Bradley, a pre-law student with a double major in political science and math. The production ran from May 28 to June 29, 2014, following previews that began May 20.

Butler made his Broadway debut in 2018 in a revival of Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh, directed by George C. Wolfe. He played Don Parritt, described as the "lost boy" of the drama, in a production that also starred Denzel Washington and David Morse. Previews began in March 2018, and the limited run closed in July 2018.

His film breakthrough arrived with Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2019, in which he portrayed Tex Watson. Butler achieved wider recognition with Baz Luhrmann's 2022 biopic Elvis, in which he played Elvis Presley. The performance earned him a British Academy Film Award and a Golden Globe Award, as well as a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor, two Critics' Choice Award nominations, and two Screen Actors Guild Award nominations. Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2023. He subsequently appeared in the Apple TV+ miniseries Masters of the Air in 2024, Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two in 2024, and Darren Aronofsky's crime thriller Caught Stealing in 2025.
