About
Augusta Keith Dabney (October 23, 1918 – February 4, 2008) was an American actress whose career spanned stage, television, and film across more than six decades. Born and raised in Berkeley, California, to Thomas G. Dabney and Jessie Dabney, she earned a degree from the University of California at Berkeley, where she belonged to Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and two honor societies. In 1937, she relocated to New York City to train at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Dabney made her Broadway debut in Abe Lincoln in Illinois in 1938 and continued performing on Broadway through 1995, with her final appearance in Sacrilege that year. Her stage credits included Return Engagement, the comedy Another Love Story, The Lady Who Came to Stay, Sweet Charity, and Everything in the Garden, among other productions. She also worked extensively in stock theater throughout her career.
During the early years of live television, Dabney appeared in multiple episodes of anthology drama series including Studio One, Kraft Television Theatre, and Robert Montgomery Presents. On November 21, 1950, she co-starred in the Armstrong Circle Theatre episode "The Perfect Type." She became particularly well known for her work in daytime television, accumulating roles across a wide range of soap operas. These included Young Dr. Malone, in which she played leading character Tracey Malone; Another World as Laura Baxter from 1964 to 1965; two separate roles on As the World Turns; Love is a Many-Splendored Thing; Guiding Light, in which she originated the role of Barbara Norris in 1970; A World Apart, where she played leading character Betty Kahlman Barry from 1970 to 1971; General Hospital as Caroline Chandler, Lee Baldwin's second wife, from 1975 to 1976; One Life to Live as Helena Ashley in 1979; and The Doctors as Theodora Van Allen from 1980 to 1981. Her most prominent daytime role was that of Isabelle Alden, a wealthy matriarch on the series Loving, which she played during three separate runs: 1983 to 1987, 1988 to 1991, and 1994 to 1995.
Dabney's film career began with That Night! in 1957, a performance that earned her a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Her final film appearance came in The Paper in 1994. Her last screen performance of any kind was in an episode of 100 Centre Street in 2001.
On September 12, 1941, Dabney married actor Kevin McCarthy in New York City. The marriage, which produced three children, also made her sister-in-law to writer Mary McCarthy. She and Kevin McCarthy divorced in 1964, and she subsequently married actor William Prince, remaining with him until his death in 1996. Dabney and Prince shared the screen together on multiple occasions, having appeared alongside each other on Young Dr. Malone, Another World, As the World Turns, and A World Apart, as well as in the 1994 film The Paper, in which they portrayed the parents of the lead character. Dabney died on February 4, 2008, in Dobbs Ferry, New York, following an extended illness, at the age of 89.
