About
Aubrey Mather (17 December 1885 – 16 January 1958) was an English character actor born in Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire. He began his stage career in 1905 and made his London debut in Brewster's Millions in 1909. His Broadway debut followed a decade later, in 1919, with Luck of the Navy, launching a stage presence in New York that would continue through 1950.
Over the course of his Broadway career, Mather appeared in a range of productions, including Bachelor Born, Good Hunting, Hand in Glove, Foolish Notion, and As You Like It, among others. His work spanned more than three decades on the New York stage, establishing him as a reliable presence in theatrical productions of the era.
Beyond the stage, Mather expanded into film work beginning in 1930 with Young Woodley. He became particularly associated with servant roles on screen, frequently cast as butlers. The 1932 film The Impassive Footman offered a notable example of this typecasting, with Mather taking the title role of the footman. Mather died on 16 January 1958 in Harrow, London, at the age of 72.
