About
Aubrey Boucicault (23 June 1868 or 1869 – 10 July 1913) was a British stage actor, playwright, and matinee idol born in London, England. He was the sixth and youngest child of the celebrated actor and playwright Dion Boucicault and actress Agnes Robertson. His older siblings were Dion William, Eva, Dion Jr., Patrice, and Nina, placing Boucicault within one of the most prominent theatrical families of the era.
Boucicault's early connection to the stage was evident from a young age. On August 7, 1887, The New York Times reported that he and his mother were expected to arrive from England that day to begin a season at St. Paul Theatre on August 22 in the production My Geraldine. His Broadway career spanned from 1895 to 1911 and encompassed both acting and book writing credits. Among his Broadway appearances were Heidelberg, The Merchant of Venice, the play Mistress Nell, the musical Higgledy-Piggledy, and the play Francesca da Rimini.
Beyond Broadway, Boucicault was active in regional theatre. During the 1903 Elitch Theatre season he served as leading man across six productions in June and July, performing opposite Jane Kennark or Maude Fealy in the leading lady roles.
Boucicault was married multiple times. His second wife was actress Amy Busby (1872–1957), though the marriage ended in divorce after only a couple of years. Busby filed divorce papers naming Victory Bateman as a co-respondent. He subsequently married Cornelia Holbrook, with whom he had a daughter, Rene Boucicault, and later married Ruth Holt. Holt performed at Elitch's in 1908.
