About

Athole Chalmers Stewart (25 June 1879 – 18 October 1940) was a British stage and film actor born in London, England. His work on stage and screen frequently placed him in authoritarian and aristocratic roles.

Stewart's stage career spanned several decades and included work on both sides of the Atlantic. In London, he was part of the original 1925 production of Noël Coward's Hay Fever at the Ambassadors Theatre. His Broadway appearances extended from 1906 to 1934 and included the plays Conversation Piece, Canaries Sometimes Sing, and The Little Stranger.

In addition to his theatrical work, Stewart appeared in film. In 1931 he portrayed Dr. Watson opposite Raymond Massey's Sherlock Holmes in The Speckled Band.

Stewart is buried in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin in Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire. His wife, Ellen Frances Stewart OBE, daughter of General William Sparkes Hatch, is buried alongside him.
