About
Ashley Michelle Tisdale was born on July 2, 1985, in Monmouth County, New Jersey, to Lisa Morris and contractor Michael Tisdale. Her father is Christian and her mother is Jewish, and she was raised with elements of both religions. Her elder sister Jennifer is also an actress and producer. Through her maternal grandfather Arnold Morris, a well-known pitchman for the Ginsu knife, Tisdale is related to businessman Ron Popeil. She attended public school and worked in retail while pursuing her career, graduating before achieving mainstream recognition.
Tisdale's path into entertainment began at age three, when she met manager Bill Perlman at a New Jersey mall. He arranged commercial auditions that resulted in her appearing in more than one hundred national network television advertisements during her childhood. Her theatrical work began at Monmouth County's Jewish Community Center, where she performed in productions of Gypsy: A Musical Fable and The Sound of Music. At age eight, she was cast as Cosette in Les Misérables, a role she recalled preparing for with only a single singing lesson. She toured with the production for two years before joining a touring production of Annie that performed in Korea. Tisdale has credited seeing Les Misérables on Broadway as the experience that motivated her to pursue the role. Her Broadway credit in Les Misérables dates to 1988, and she originally hails from West Deal, New Jersey.
At age twelve, Tisdale performed for President Bill Clinton at the White House as part of a troupe. Seeking broader opportunities, she and her family relocated to Los Angeles, California. In 1997 she made her television debut with guest appearances on Smart Guy and 7th Heaven, and she also began modeling work with Ford Models during that period. The following year she contributed voice work to An All Dogs Christmas Carol and A Bug's Life. A guest role on Boston Public in 2000 earned her a Young Artist Award nomination for Best Guest Performance in a TV Drama. She continued accumulating screen credits in the years that followed, with appearances in Donnie Darko in 2001 and The Mayor of Oyster Bay in 2002.
Tisdale achieved widespread recognition in 2005 when she joined the main cast of the Disney Channel series The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, in which she played Maddie Fitzpatrick through the show's conclusion in 2008. The role earned her a Nickelodeon UK Kids' Choice Award. Her profile rose further when she was cast as Sharpay Evans in the Disney Channel film High School Musical in 2006, which drew 7.7 million viewers at its premiere and became the network's most successful film of that year. The film's soundtrack sold over three million copies in the United States, and the duet "What I've Been Looking For," recorded with Lucas Grabeel, became her first top-40 entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and received a gold certification from the RIAA. Tisdale participated in the High School Musical: The Concert tour from 2006 to 2007 to support the film, and she also released a cover of "Kiss the Girl" that year to promote The Little Mermaid.
The success of High School Musical led to a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records. Tisdale began work on her debut studio album in 2006, releasing "Be Good to Me" as the lead single and "He Said She Said" as the follow-up. Her debut album, Headstrong, was released in February 2007, incorporating elements of dance-pop and hip-hop. It debuted at number five on the Billboard 200, selling 64,000 copies in its first week, and ultimately moved over 500,000 copies in the United States, earning a gold certification from the RIAA. She also co-executive produced a documentary, There's Something About Ashley, chronicling the album's recording and the making of her music videos, and she promoted the record with her Headstrong Tour Across America.
Tisdale reprised the role of Sharpay Evans in High School Musical 2 in 2007, a film that drew seventeen million viewers at its premiere, making it the most-watched movie in cable television history at that time. The film received two Primetime Emmy Awards nominations and its soundtrack debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 615,000 copies sold in its first week. That same year, she was cast as the voice of Candace Flynn in the Disney Channel animated series Phineas and Ferb, a role she continued through 2015 and resumed in 2025. Her second studio album, Guilty Pleasure, followed in 2009 and achieved less commercial success than Headstrong, after which she and Warner Bros. Records parted ways.
In 2008, Tisdale founded her production company, Blondie Girl Productions, which signed a multi-year deal with Relativity Media in 2010. Under that arrangement she produced the television series Miss Advised in 2012. She also returned to acting on television with Hellcats in 2010 and starred in Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure in 2011, a High School Musical spin-off for which she also released an accompanying soundtrack. Tisdale served as executive producer of the ABC Family series Young and Hungry, which ran from 2014 to 2018, and joined the main cast of Clipped in 2015.
In 2013, Tisdale announced her third studio album and released the promotional single "You're Always Here," while also starring in the horror comedy film Scary Movie 5. She returned to music in 2018 with the singles "Voices in My Head" and "Love Me & Let Me Go," and her third studio album, Symptoms, was released in 2019. That same year she joined the cast of the CBS sitcom Carol's Second Act as Jenny Kenney, a role she held through 2020. She subsequently served as a panelist on the reality competition series The Masked Dancer from 2020 to 2021 and led the interactive video game The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes in 2021.
