About
Ashley Tyler Ciminella, known professionally as Ashley Judd, was born on April 19, 1968, in Granada Hills, Los Angeles. Her mother, Naomi Judd, became a prominent country music singer and motivational speaker, and her elder half-sister, Wynonna Judd, is also a country music singer. Her father, Michael Charles Ciminella, worked as a marketing analyst for the horse racing industry. Her paternal grandfather was of Sicilian descent, and her paternal grandmother was a descendant of Mayflower pilgrim William Brewster. Judd's parents divorced in 1972, and the following year her mother relocated with her to Kentucky, where she spent most of her childhood.
Judd attended thirteen schools before college, among them the Sayre School in Lexington, Kentucky, Paul G. Blazer High School in Ashland, Kentucky, and Franklin High School in Tennessee. She briefly pursued modeling in Japan during a school break. At the University of Kentucky, she majored in French, minored in anthropology, art history, theater, and women's studies, joined the sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma, and spent a semester studying in France. She graduated from the University of Kentucky Honors Program and was nominated to Phi Beta Kappa, later receiving her BA in French from the university in May 2007. She was awarded an Honorary DHL degree from Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky, on May 9, 2009, and earned a mid-career MPA degree from Harvard Kennedy School in 2010.
After college, Judd moved to Hollywood, where she studied with acting teacher Robert Carnegie at Playhouse West and worked as a hostess at The Ivy restaurant. She made her television debut in 1991, appearing as Ensign Robin Lefler in two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and held a recurring role as Reed on the NBC drama Sisters from 1991 to 1994. Her feature film debut came with a small part in the 1992 film Kuffs. The following year, she landed her first starring role as the title character in Victor Nuñez's Ruby in Paradise, which won the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize. Although Oliver Stone cast her in Natural Born Killers in 1994, her scenes were cut from the theatrical release. In 1995, she earned critical recognition for her roles in Smoke, opposite Harvey Keitel, and in Michael Mann's Heat, opposite Val Kilmer. That same year she appeared in Philip Ridley's The Passion of Darkly Noon.
In 1996, Judd co-starred with Mira Sorvino in Norma Jean and Marilyn, portraying Marilyn Monroe, and appeared in a supporting role in A Time to Kill. By the end of the decade she had established herself as a leading actress in commercially successful thrillers, including Kiss the Girls in 1997 and Double Jeopardy in 1999. The early 2000s brought roles in Where the Heart Is, Someone Like You, High Crimes, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, and the critically acclaimed Frida, all released between 2000 and 2002. In 2004, she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress for her performance in De-Lovely, in which she appeared opposite Kevin Kline as Cole Porter. Later film work included Dolphin Tale in 2011 and its 2014 sequel, Olympus Has Fallen in 2013, and the Divergent franchise beginning in 2014, in which she played Natalie Prior across three installments through 2016.
Judd's Broadway career spanned from 1994 to 2003. She appeared in the play Picnic and starred as Maggie the Cat in the 2003 Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. In December 1999, Judd became engaged to Scottish racing driver Dario Franchitti, and the two married in December 2001 at Skibo Castle in Scotland. They divorced in 2013. In 2011, Judd published her memoir All That Is Bitter and Sweet, which addresses her life from adolescence through adulthood with a focus on her humanitarian work. In February 2021, while hiking in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, she shattered her leg and was transported by porters for 55 hours before reaching a hospital in South Africa for surgery. Throughout her career, Judd has also been active in global humanitarian efforts and political activism.
