About

Ashley Brown is an American actress and singer born on February 3, 1982, in Gulf Breeze, Florida, the youngest of four children. She began singing at age six and commenced professional vocal training at fourteen. Brown pursued formal study at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and her career in professional theater began shortly after graduation when casting director Tara Rubin took notice of her.

Brown's early professional work included the Disney touring production On the Record, which led directly to her Broadway debut on September 20, 2005, when she stepped into the role of Belle in Beauty and the Beast, replacing Brooke Tansley. She held the role for eight months, departing on May 28, 2006, and was succeeded by Sarah Litzsinger.

Her most prominent Broadway credit came on November 16, 2006, when Mary Poppins opened with Brown in the title role. She remained with the production for two years, leaving on October 5, 2008, and was replaced by Scarlett Strallen, who had previously played the role in the West End. Brown reprised the character in the United States national tour beginning March 11, 2009, departing February 7, 2010, when Caroline Sheen took over. She returned to the Broadway production once more from March 8 to July 17, 2011, covering the role while Laura Michelle Kelly was away filming. Brown received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Musical in 2007 for her work in the production.

In March 2007, Brown appeared on the television soap opera All My Children as herself. On October 20, 2009, she performed the role of Snow White in the world symphonic premiere of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – A Symphonic Retelling at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, conducted by John Mauceri. Her first solo album, a collection of American songbook standards, was released in January 2010.

Brown played Maria in The Muny production of The Sound of Music, which ran from July 26 to August 1, 2010, earning her the Kevin Kline Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical. That same year, she originated the role of Oona in the world premiere of Limelight: The Story of Charlie Chaplin at the La Jolla Playhouse, which ran from September 7 through October 17, 2010.

In 2012, Brown played Magnolia Hawks in Francesca Zambello's production of Show Boat for the Lyric Opera of Chicago, running February 12 through March 17, alongside Nathan Gunn, Alyson Cambridge, and Morris Robinson. The production was broadcast on NPR stations in June 2012, marking the first time a complete performance of Show Boat had been broadcast on radio. In 2013, Brown made her solo Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Pops, and that same year appeared in the television broadcast The Sound of Music Live!, playing Ursula, a servant in the Von Trapp household. She returned to Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops in December 2018.

In 2015, Brown sang "A Kiss Goodnight" by Richard M. Sherman, the exit song for Disneyland Forever, a production marking Disneyland's 60th anniversary. She also launched the national tour of The Sound of Music in September 2015, playing the Mother Abbess. In 2017, she appeared in the Encores! production of The Golden Apple, playing Mrs. Juniper and Madame Calypso. Brown returned to Broadway in 2024 in the revival of Elf the Musical, playing the role of Emily Hobbs.

Brown became engaged to actor Daniel Wisler on April 18, 2010, and the two married on November 5, 2011. Their daughter was born on May 9, 2016.
