About

Asa Somers, born December 5, 1969, in Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, is an American actor working across stage, film, and television. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy before earning a Bachelor of Arts in English literature and theatre studies from Yale University.

Somers made his Broadway debut in The Rocky Horror Show, where he served as a Phantom and Narrator understudy. He subsequently joined the original Broadway casts of Dance of the Vampires as Herbert, Taboo in the dual capacity of fight captain and standby for Boy George, and Grey Gardens as a standby for the roles of Joe and Jerry. His Broadway work also includes Next to Normal, in which he starred.

His association with Next to Normal extended well beyond Broadway. Off Broadway, he played Dr. Madden/Dr. Fine in the Second Stage Theatre production. He originated the role of Dan in the U.S. national tour alongside Alice Ripley, Emma Hunton, Curt Hansen, and Jeremy Kushnier, remaining with that production through its close on July 30, 2011. In June 2014, Somers returned to the role of Dan Goodman in Penn State's CentreStage production at the Pavilion Theatre, which ran from June 6 to 14. As of December 2016, he was a standby for the role of Larry Murphy in Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway.

His Off Broadway credits include Once Around the Sun as Kevin at the Zipper Theatre, The Burnt Part Boys as Miner Taylor in the Playwrights Horizons production, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch as Hedwig at the Jane Street Theatre. Regional work has taken him to a range of venues and roles: Edmund Kean in Kean at Yale University, Oedipus Rex in We're All Dead at the Blue Heron Arts Center, Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the Victoria Theatre in San Francisco, Berger in Hair at the Theatre Under the Stars in Houston, Michael in Man in the White Suit at New York Stage and Film, Daniel in Tallgrass Gothic at the Actors Theatre of Louisville, and the Narrator in Fly by Night at Dallas Theater Center, where he performed from April 26 to May 26, 2013.

Somers has also developed original work. His rock musical Something As Big As This had a closed developmental reading on July 2, 2012, directed by Louis Hobson and featuring former Next to Normal cast members Brian d'Arcy James, Preston Sadleir, and Emma Hunton. A free public workshop presentation followed at Seattle's Balagan Theatre on January 14, 2013, again directed by Hobson, though with a different cast.

On television, Somers appeared as Blaine Richardson in the Sopranos episode "D-Girl" in 2000 and played a paramedic in the Whoopi episode "Once Bitten" in 2003. He portrayed Mike Conneally in the Law and Order episode "Over Here" in 2007 and appeared twice on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, as Craig Vattic in "Game" and as Colin Andrews in "Smut." Additional television credits include the pilot of The Wedding Album as Chaz, the Ugly Betty episode "Blue on Blue" as a restaurant customer, The Good Wife episode "Heart" as Mr. Harper, Royal Pains, Gossip Girl as Richard Wellings in "It's a Dad, Dad, Dad, Dad World," and a Doctor in the second episode of Elementary, "While You Were Sleeping," in 2012.

In film, Somers co-stars as Kyle Cassimer in the 2009 independent rock musical Clear Blue Tuesday, centered on the September 11 attacks, which opened at the Quad Cinema in Greenwich Village. He appeared as Rich in Never Forever, screened at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, and as Gus in Ira and Abby. His short film credits include A Change of Climate as Eddie, When Stars Fall as Capella, and No, No Now as Adrian Lanes.
