About
Arye Gross is an American actor born on March 17, 1960, in Los Angeles, California, to Sheri and Joseph Gross, the latter of whom worked as an aerospace engineer before transitioning to business. Gross married Lisa Schulz in 1999, and the couple have one daughter, born in 2006.
Gross pursued formal theater training after being accepted to the University of California, Irvine in 1977 to study theater. The following summer he entered the Professional Conservatory program at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, California, where he subsequently spent three years as a member of the acting company. That tenure culminated in his participation in the world premiere of L.J. Schneiderman's Screwball. Director Frank Condon then brought Gross into Teatro Campesino under Luis Valdez, where he worked for a year.
His stage work in the Los Angeles area spanned multiple companies and productions. At the Stages Theatre Center he appeared in La Bete and Georges Feydeau's Sleep, I Want You to Sleep, and also served as Managing Director of that organization. His Pasadena Playhouse credits include Room Service, while at the Los Angeles Theatre Center he performed in Three Sisters. Additional stage credits include Taming of the Shrew and Much Ado About Nothing for the Grove Shakespeare Festival and Troilus and Cressida for the Globe Playhouse. Gross is a member of the Antaeus Theatre Company, where his roles have included Mrs. Warren's Profession and the title character in Uncle Vanya. His South Coast Repertory credits extend to the world premieres of Richard Greenberg's Our Mother's Brief Affair, Donald Margulies' Brooklyn Boy, and Eliza Clark's Future Thinking, the last of which premiered in 2016.
Brooklyn Boy provided Gross with his Broadway debut when the production transferred to New York in 2005, where it was listed under the title Brooklyn. On television, Gross is best known for playing Adam Green on the ABC sitcom Ellen during the program's first three seasons. He also starred in the short-lived series Citizen Baines alongside James Cromwell and held a recurring role as Dr. Sidney Perlmutter on Castle. Early in his career, Gross provided the adult voice of Kevin Arnold on the pilot episode of The Wonder Years when it first aired following Super Bowl XXII, though that narration was subsequently re-recorded using Daniel Stern's voice, with Stern continuing as narrator for the full run of the series. Gross has made guest appearances on numerous television programs, including Diff'rent Strokes, Knight Rider, The Outer Limits, Six Feet Under, Friends, Diagnosis: Murder, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Law & Order: Criminal Intent. In 1999, he made his film directorial debut with The Prince and the Surfer, a project in which he also acted.
