About
Artie Hall (c. 1881–1939) was an American actress and vaudeville singer who performed in both theatrical and popular entertainment contexts during the early twentieth century. A petite performer with a notably powerful voice, Hall built her career primarily in vaudeville, where she was recognized as a coon shouter and became known for her blackface performances. Among her most prominent stage roles was Topsy in William A. Brady's production of Uncle Tom's Cabin, which stood as the peak achievement of her performing career.
Hall's act incorporated a distinctive and controversial moment in which she removed a glove at the conclusion of a song to expose her white skin to the audience. Her Broadway work included an appearance in 1911 in the musical The Never Homes. Beyond the stage, Hall's name entered the news in connection with the San Francisco earthquake of April 18, 1906, when she was erroneously reported to have died in the disaster. The New York Times published the mistaken account before it was established that she had survived.
In her personal life, Hall married actor Robert Fulgora around 1899. The marriage ended in divorce by September 1914. She subsequently married William Atwell, who worked as a vaudeville agent. Her sister, Pauline Des Landes, performed professionally under the name Bonita and was likewise active as a vaudeville actress.
Hall died on March 20, 1939, at her home in Astoria, Queens, New York, from a kidney ailment. She was 58 years old.
