About

Arthur Stanford (1878–1917) was an American stage actor and singer whose Broadway career spanned from 1899 to 1912. He worked primarily in comedies and musicals, accumulating a range of credits across more than a decade of stage work.

Stanford made his Broadway debut in 1899 in A Greek Slave, followed by Miss Prinnt in 1900, a production that featured Marie Dressler in its cast. He went on to appear in Mam'zelle Champagne in 1906 alongside Maude Fulton, a performance that placed him in the audience on the night of Stanford White's murder. The following year he appeared in The Vanderbilt Cup, which starred Elsie Janis, and he later reunited with Janis in The Fair Co-ed in 1909, a production in which he held a starring role.

Among his other notable Broadway engagements, Stanford starred in The Hoyden and appeared in Judy Forgot in 1910, a musical in which he performed opposite Marie Cahill. His final Broadway credit was Modest Suzanne in 1912.

Beyond the stage, Stanford appeared in one feature film, The Whirl of Life, released in 1915 and starring Vernon and Irene Castle. The film has survived, and a copy is accessible online through the New York Public Library.

Stanford died in July 1917 of mastoidal meningitis following an operation. He was 39 years old.
