About
Arthur Siegel (December 31, 1923 – September 13, 1994) was an American songwriter, performer, and book writer whose career spanned Broadway, recording, and cabaret. He was born in Lakewood Township, New Jersey, and raised in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Siegel trained at two prominent institutions, studying acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and music at the Juilliard School.
Siegel made his Broadway debut in 1946 in the play Lovely Me. As a songwriter, he became closely associated with the Leonard Sillman-produced New Faces revue series, contributing material to New Faces of 1952, New Faces of 1956, and New Faces of 1962. Among the songs he wrote for those productions, several became widely recognized, including "Monotonous," composed in collaboration with lyricist June Carroll and performed by Eartha Kitt, as well as "Penny Candy," "Love is a Simple Thing," and "I Want You to Be the First One to Know."
In 1962, Siegel collaborated with actress and singer Kaye Ballard on an LP titled Peanuts, based on Charles M. Schulz's comic strip. Siegel played Charlie Brown and Ballard played Lucy Van Pelt, with the recording dramatizing a series of vignettes drawn from the strip's archive.
Siegel also recorded his own music as a performer. His releases included Arthur Siegel Sings Arthur Siegel in 1992 and Live at the Ballroom in 1995. He died on September 13, 1994, at his home in Manhattan from heart failure at the age of 70.
