About

Arthur Macrae was the stage name and pen name of William Arthur Schröpfer, an English playwright, comic actor, and composer born on 17 March 1908 in London, England. He died on 25 February 1962. After training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, from which he graduated in 1928, Macrae built a career that spanned acting, musical composition, and dramatic writing across both the West End and Broadway.

His acting work included appearances in notable West End productions, among them Noël Coward's Cavalcade in 1931 and South Sea Bubble in 1956. Macrae made his Broadway presence felt in 1937, and his New York credits include George and Margaret, Under the Counter, and John Murray Anderson's Almanac.

As a writer, Macrae contributed to stage and screen across several decades. His earliest produced play, Flat to Let, opened in 1931 at the Criterion Theatre with Lilian Braithwaite and Ann Todd in the cast. He wrote the screenplay for the 1935 film She Shall Have Music and co-wrote the musical play Under Your Hat in 1939, which was subsequently filmed in 1940. He wrote the book for the West End musical Under the Counter, a hit production that opened in 1945. His 1948 play Traveller's Joy was adapted for film the following year. Macrae also contributed the segment "Winter Cruise" to the 1951 film Encore. His 1954 play Both Ends Meet was later adapted by the BBC for its Sunday-Night Play series, airing on 25 March 1962, shortly after his death.
