About
John Arthur Kennedy was born on February 17, 1914, in Worcester, Massachusetts, the son of Helen (née Thompson) and John Timothy Kennedy, a dentist. He attended South High School in Worcester and later graduated from Worcester Academy before studying drama at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1934. He married Mary Cheffey in March 1938, and the couple had two children: actress Laurie Kennedy and a son, Terence.
After relocating to New York City, Kennedy joined the Group Theatre, performing under the billing of John Kennedy, and subsequently toured with a classical repertory company. His Broadway debut came in September 1937, when he appeared as Bushy in Maurice Evans' production of Richard II at the St. James Theatre. He returned to the Evans company in 1939 to play Sir Richard Vernon in Henry IV, Part 1. His Broadway career extended from 1938 to 1973 and encompassed a wide range of productions, including the comedy The Loud Red Patrick, the drama Time Limit!, and Veronica's Room.
Kennedy became closely identified with the work of playwright Arthur Miller, originating several of Miller's most significant stage roles. He first played Chris Keller in All My Sons in 1947, then took on the role of Biff Loman in Death of a Salesman in 1949 at the Morosco Theatre, a performance that earned him the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. He later created the role of John Proctor in The Crucible in 1953 and appeared as Walter Franz in The Price in 1968. Critics noted his capacity for exceptional honesty and naturalness on stage, qualities that distinguished his work in these productions. In 1961, he played the title role in Becket opposite Laurence Olivier as Henry II.
Kennedy's film career began in 1940 with City for Conquest, in which he played James Cagney's younger brother. Over the following decades he appeared in a substantial body of film work, including High Sierra, They Died with Their Boots On, Champion, The Glass Menagerie, The Desperate Hours, Trial, Peyton Place, Some Came Running, A Summer Place, Elmer Gantry, Barabbas, Lawrence of Arabia, Nevada Smith, and Fantastic Voyage. He received five Academy Award nominations across his career. His performance in the 1955 film Trial brought him a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor, and the New York Film Critics named him Best Actor for Bright Victory in 1951. His portrayal of a newspaper reporter in Elmer Gantry earned him both a Film Daily Award and a Limelight Award. He was particularly noted for his collaborations with director Anthony Mann and actor James Stewart in Bend of the River (1952) and The Man from Laramie (1955), in both of which he played sympathetic villains. In 1974, he appeared as a series regular on the short-lived ABC police drama Nakia, playing Sheriff Sam Jericho.
In his later years, Kennedy faced significant personal and health challenges, including the death of his wife in 1975, failing eyesight, alcoholism, and thyroid cancer. He spent much of that period in Savannah, Georgia. His final film appearance came in Signs of Life in 1989. Kennedy died of cancer on January 5, 1990, at the age of 75.
