About
Arthur Howard, born Arthur John Steiner on 18 January 1910 in Camberwell, London, was an English actor whose career spanned stage, film, and television. He died on 18 June 1995 in Westminster, London, and is buried in the East London Cemetery.
Howard came from a family with deep ties to the entertainment industry. He was the younger son of Lilian, née Blumberg, and Ferdinand "Frank" Steiner. His brother was film actor Leslie Howard, and his sister Irene Howard worked as a casting director. In 1936, Howard married actress Jean Compton Mackenzie, a daughter of actor Frank Compton. Their son, Alan Howard, went on to become a stage actor.
His Broadway career included an appearance in 1920 in the play The Hottentot. On television, Howard was perhaps best known for his recurring role in the school comedy series Whack-O, in which he played the hapless assistant headmaster Pettigrew opposite Jimmy Edwards's headmaster character. He reprised his association with that production in the 1960 film adaptation, Bottoms Up.
Howard appeared in a number of films over the course of his career, among them American Friends and The Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins. He also took on the small role of Cavendish in the James Bond film Moonraker. His television work included a guest appearance in the 1952 series Inspector Morley: Late of Scotland Yard, in which he played a shop assistant in an episode titled "The Red Flame."
In 1961, Howard was arrested for importuning and served a week in prison.
