About

Arthur Gershwin (March 14, 1900 – November 19, 1981) was a New York-born composer and the third of four siblings in the Gershwin family, which included Ira, George, and Frances. Despite his work as a composer, Gershwin earned his living as a stockbroker rather than as a professional musician.

His Broadway credit as a composer is the two-act musical A Lady Says Yes, which opened at the Broadhurst Theatre on January 10, 1945, and ran through March 25, 1945, for a total of 87 performances. The show is set across two time periods, 1545 and 1945, with action taking place in Venice, Washington D.C., and China.

Among his compositions is the song "Invitation to the Blues," written with lyrics by Doris Fisher. The song was used in the 1982 film Tootsie and was also recorded by Julie London.

In the 1940s, Gershwin married Judy Lane, a singer with the Xavier Cugat Orchestra. The couple had one son, Marc George Gershwin, who serves as a trustee of the George Gershwin Trust. Marc's sons — Adam, Todd, and Alex Gershwin — are also trustees of the trust.

His brother George, in a letter to their mother dated May 19, 1937, noted that Arthur was writing a considerable number of tunes and expressed hope that he would find a market for them. In a 1972 interview with Robert Kimball and Alfred Simon, Arthur recalled that as a child he had been George's close companion, spending more time with him than Ira did. Frances described Arthur as the comedic member of the family and noted that he played music by ear. She also recalled that when his brothers introduced him, Arthur would remark, "Yes, I'm the unknown Gershwin."
