About

Arthur Batanides (April 9, 1923 – January 10, 2000) was an American actor born in Tacoma, Washington, whose career spanned stage, film, and television across several decades. His interest in performance began during World War II, when he entertained fellow soldiers with stand-up routines while stationed in Europe. Following the war, he pursued formal training in dramatic art at the Actors' Lab in Los Angeles, building on that foundation with extensive work in live theater.

Batanides made his Broadway debut in 1952, appearing in See the Jaguar. His stage experience during this period contributed to a versatile screen career that took hold in the years that followed. Among his film appearances are The Unearthly (1957), Violent Road (1958), The Leech Woman (1960), Man-Trap (1961), The Maltese Bippy (1969), Evil Roy Slade (1972), and Brannigan (1975). He also appeared as Mr. Kirkland in four installments of the Police Academy film series, with the sixth entry, City Under Siege, serving as his final acting credit.

On television, Batanides accumulated an extensive list of guest appearances, including roles on Crusader, Tombstone Territory, Zorro, Combat!, One Step Beyond, The Twilight Zone, The Asphalt Jungle, Blue Light, Lost in Space, I Spy, Mission: Impossible, The Silent Force, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Wild Wild West, Bearcats!, The Odd Couple, The Andy Griffith Show, Bonanza, Columbo, and Happy Days. In a 1963 episode of Perry Mason titled "The Case of the Shoplifter's Shoe," he portrayed Bill Golding. That same year, he played Littleboy Sherman in The Rifleman episode "Old Man Running," which aired on March 17, 1963. He is also recognized for his portrayal of Starfleet geologist D'Amato in the Star Trek episode "That Which Survives."

Batanides died in Los Angeles, California on January 10, 2000, at the age of 76.
